Music Lyrics: Lyrics Analysis
The song I wish to discuss is Imagine by John Lennon. The some was written for the album of the same name in 1971. The song discuss a world without religion, countries, heaven, hell, and no possessions. It is essentially a plea by Lennon for people to let go of that which divide people and to live as brothers and sisters in humanity. Lennon, a known pacifist, is promoting a peaceful world with no strife. Sometimes when this song is covered, the person covering it will change the lyric "and no religion too" to "one religion too' or something similar. Beyond the lyrics, the piano rift that plays through the whole song is beautiful. This song though is extremely sad for me to watch and/or listen to. I find it very depressing and saddening that a man for peace and tranquility would be shot. I suggest to everyone to go to youtube and search Imagine and watch the first video that pops up. The song and the video are amazing.

Music Review
In late August 2008, I attended the concert festival Outside Lands in San Francisco. The performances took place over a weekend at Golden Gate Park. Of all the acts I saw, the best by far and bar none was the set by Wilco. Wilco was the second to last band to play at Outside Lands. This was the first time I saw Wilco live. I had looked forward to their performance more than any other band and they didn't disappoint. My brothers and I had tried to get closer to the stage, but by the time we got their, two hours before their performance, it was packed for them. We were lucky ,though; We were able to squeeze all the way up to the fifth row off to the right of the stage. We had to stand waiting for them with no wiggle room for nearly two hours. When they finally came on, all the pain in my legs went away. I might want to add that this pain was the build up of a weekend where I walked eighty blocks on friday, forty blocks on Saturday, and another forty on Sunday, not to add all the walking inside the festival. Wilco started with some songs that I didn't know very well. I still enjoyed it a lot, but many of the songs early I just didn't know well, until the song "spiders (kidsmoke)". This already is my favorite Wilco song and when they played it, it blew me away. The song, being already ten minutes, was turned into a twenty minute jam for the band. They played just about every song I could have asked for. As they were playing, I started to get worried that they would have to stop soon as that had happened to many bands at the festival already, but they just kept trucking along. After the greatness that is Wilco had ended, I got into a few conversations with the people around me and it seemed that the general consensus was that Wilco should have ended the festival and NOT Jack Johnson. Johnson is alright, but for the Sunday headliner, singing to 100,000 people, he should not be there. I guess that is alright though. I got to the greatest band of right now. And please go away Jack Johnson. Go smoke a joint on the beach in Hawaii and never come back. You can still make music, but do NOT leave and steal headlining acts again.

Five Songs I Hate
These songs make me hate music and the people who listen to them.
5. "Last Resort" by Papa Roach. From the time I first heard this song, I knew I would hate it. Listen to it and you will understand. It adds nothing to the musical world.
4. "D'yer Mak'er" by Led Zeppelin. Most people might be shocked that I hate this song. I love the Zep, but I heard this song so many times on the radio that a major distaste for it has grown.
3. "Rollin'" by Limp Bizkit. What a horrible song. I think it is very funny though. When I listen to this song, I think of a MadTV's skit of this song. Now that was priceless.
2. "Alcohol" by the Millionaires. This "band" could be number one on this list, but then again, they are not a real band. Look them up on youtube.com and you too can experience the horribleness.
1. Jon Bon Jovi. Everything he ever does will be a personal insult to me in my eyes. His music is lower than the soil beneath the surface of the earth. It's kind of funny how my hatred grew for him. I am a huge hockey fan and my favorite team is the Ducks. In 2003, the ducks went to the Stanley Cup Finals against the New Jersey Devils. In seven games, the Devils bested the Ducks in a well fought series. Now, my hatred was born after the game ended and the Devils were celebrating when a certain song started to play; Living on a Prayer. From that moment on, whenever I hear Bon Jovi, I think of the Ducks' lose in the finals. I realize that any song that would have played then I would hate forever, so I am glad it was a talentless hack. The saddest part of it all though is that when the Ducks did win the Stanley Cup, I cannot remember the song that was played or really anything that happened after the game. It deeply saddens me that I will always remember their lose more than their triumph.

Fever Chapter 7
I particularly enjoyed the paragraphs that discussed Michael Jackson. I love how Tim Riley talks about Jackson. He says that he had so much soul and precocious sexual edge at just the age of ten, but he turned into doomed, beyond repair person. He describes him as having so much potential to be a star and how he did capitalize on it, but only ruin himself in the end. I was to young to remember when he got married to Lisa Marie Presley, but from the way it is described in the book, it seemed to be a farce. Michael Jackson had major success in the 80s with albums like "Thriller", but he progressively became stranger. He started getting plastic surgery to change how he looked and eventually, he bleached himself. This is how he became Wacko Jacko. He did many odd things like build a theme park for himself, bought the Elephant Man's bones, and settled out of court on the case of his pedophilia. This seems to culminate in 2002 when he dangled his baby son out a window in Germany. Jackson is the perfect example of what not to do with the later end of your career.
RE: FINAL PAPER
To narrow it down a bit, I will research the influence of drugs on the Beatles. I think it is pretty apparent how drugs changed them and their sound.

Talking About Sex
In college, the pressure to have sex is lessened by comparison to high school. In college, not as many people are in each other's business which creates more privacy and thus reducing the pressure. High school, though, is a different story. Regardless of the size of your school, word always gets around to people about things very quickly. I may not have ran in the major social circles at my school, but I always heard about someone doing something. To be honest, half the time I had no idea who they were. The advice I would pass on would be that rushing into something if you're not sure or ready for it is not a good idea; don't follow the crowd; do what you feel like doing in your own time; and you'll live without sex. In terms of dating, I don't have much advice to give out. Respect the person you are with and don't be immature. Do not google someone before going out with them; that is creepy, maybe afterwards. That is up to the person.
Final Paper
For my final paper topic, I have chosen to write about the influence of drugs on the music of rock n' roll of the late 60s and early 70s. Many of my favorite musical artists emerged out of this time and used drugs. It is also at this time that drugs use became synonymous with rock n' roll. I am curious to know, of the music they wrote, how much of it was influenced by drugs and is that the secret to good music? I am half serious about that last part, but it is a good point to look into. Is most of the music I like drug influenced?

Music List #4
1. "You Shock Me All Night Long" by AC/DC.
2. "Are You Experienced?" by the Jimi Hendrix Experience.
3. "The Joker" by The Steve Miller Band.
4. "Smoke Two Joints" by Sublime
5. "Comfortably Numb" by Pink Floyd
"Comfortably Numb" is my favorite song on this list for no particular reason other than I love to listen to it. Whenever I hear it on the radio, I have to stop what I am doing and listen to it as well as mouth the words.

Talking About Drugs
Going to college can open people up to a new world of education, friends, and drugs and/or other paraphernalia. Regardless of your personal view on drugs, many people in college use drugs; albeit a simple cup of coffee or cocaine. The personal vices of people influence who they hang out with and how they act. In most normal social circles, coffee, cigarettes, and marijuana are all relatively acceptable. In my family, everyone drinks coffee. My brother started drinking coffee at the age of 4 and still does it to this day at all times of the day. I will never drink coffee habitually as I believe that one day it will be found that coffee will cause cancer or something else bad. Cigarettes are also a very common drug used by people. Both my brothers now smoke cigarettes and I know many people who smoke cigarettes. I once again do not, though. They make me sick. I used to smoke cigars, but not anymore. I know many people who smoke marijuana. By my perspective, that is fine, but I understand the opposition against it. The less sociable acceptably drugs would be cocaine, speed, acid, and shrums to name a few. In general, these are drugs that are seen as more serious and possibly dangerous.

Peer Mentor Seminar
I went to the seminar on test anxiety. Honestly, I went just because I had to. I really do not have test anxiety problems. I am usually very calm going into a test or very excited at the most. Though, the seminar offered many facts about test taking and the effect it had on people. A key point presented was that everyone needs to have stress. Without it, people would never do anything, but with too much stress, a person can become ill or have panic attacks. It is important to find the balance of stress in all our lives. The middle path is the best way to go when it comes to regarding stress. I learned some of the physical ailments one can get from stress and I a little shocked. I know the basics such as sweaty palms, negative thoughts, and stomach aches. I was surprised to learn that one could actually vomit from stress. In the seminar, we played a game of tic tac toe and had to answer questions about stress to get to mark the spot we wanted. Unfortunately, no one won the game, but in the process, we learned a lot of information. I was pleased with the way the seminar went and how it was presented. The best part of the whole thing though, had to be when everyone said their names and why they had come. Just about everybody said it was to satisfy a muse class requirement.
Study Tip #6
When studying for a test, try speaking the notes to yourself out loud. Repeat them three times.

Four Year Plan
The next four years of my life are still a little up in the air, but I have chosen a path for which I will follow, at least for this essay. As of now, I am a Business/Marketing major, but I see myself switching to advertising in the coming semester. I have found that every time I envision myself doing "business", I see myself unhappy, in a cubical. I cannot be in a profession where this is my environment everyday and I do not really get to use any of my creative ideas. It is for this reason that I plan to switch my major to Advertising. In this major, I have to take 40 units from the JMC, Journal and Mass Communication, and 80 units from outside the JMC. Along with that are some classes that I will have to take for example MCOM 72, MCOM 100, MCOM 101, and MCOM 111. MCOM 111 is very important as it an internship that will become to me my junior year. After completing this class, the class ADV 129 Campaigns becomes available for me to take. Also, within this major, I can take the creative track or the management track. I would take the creative track as it would suit me better and this means that I would take the classes ENGL 71. I have several classes I can take in the Advertising department, but sadly I cannot take all of them as their is not enough time. Actually, as of now, it would be impossible for me to graduate in four years going at the pace I'm going now. Even if I took more units, it cannot be done unless I start taking classes in the summer, as I plan to do if I can. I still have to meet with my advisor about the switch in majors, but at this point, in my mind I am no longer a business major

Music Memories #2
I e-mailed my mom the question about her music memories as a child and how they changed as she became older. She said that the first music she listened to was her parents as come to think of it, so was it for me as well. She use to listened to classical music until rock n' roll came. She really liked the fact that it got everyone dancing. The first rock artist she remembers was Chubby Checkers for the song "the Twist". As she grew up in the sixties, there was a lot of music that was coming in and the music she enjoyed the most was the Beetles. She also grew up listening to bands like Simon and Garfunkle, Carol King, Judy Collins mainly because they were groups yo could get up and dance to. She even saw Miles Davis and was blown away. this same music is still what she listens to along with some modern groups like Regina Spector, Fiest, and Frou Frou. Lyrics are very important to her as she likes to sing them often. Even though her family, my family, are not very big dancers, she still enjoys to sing and listen to music that her family listen to as it is good music. And to this day, her favorite band is still the Beetles as it is that she knows every word to all the songs.
Study Tip #5
This maybe a very specific case, but I was just on an airplane and realized that it is a perfect place to study. There is a constant hum of either the engines or the people which creates a white noise which if you are like me is perfect for studying.

Study Tip #4
For difficult classes, make study groups with people in the class, preferable one's that are taking it seriously
Elvis' Influence on Music
To imagine a world without Elvis Presley is to imagine a world with very little going on in music. Wether you love him or hate him, without Elvis, most modern bands would not be who they are now. Elvis was the king and for good reason, too. He was the first to blend sounds and even though I believe in time someone else would have done it if he had not, it would not be as appealing as Elvis was. Elvis had something the rest did not, those hips. Elvis' revolutionary style and presentation caused him to influence music for generations.
The hips influenced bands like the Beetles. True the Beetles never shook their hips, but their long hair was considered different and drove some girls crazy. It became apparent to record producers that sex appeal could sell and so they made bands like the Monkeys. This same ideology would lead to boy bands and girl groups that did not exactly focus on the music and more on the look. Elvis departure from the norm of the time may also paved the way for bands in the genres of punk, metal, grunge, and alternative rock. All the genres were considered very different from what was being played at the time and grew out of a resentment of that music. Elvis did the same thing in challenging the norm with his new style. Without him these styles may have never come around and we would not have bands like the Ramones, The Clash, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, or Green Day.

Five New Songs I like
1. Icky Thump by the White Stripes of the album of the same name. Oh, I love this song. I think Jack White is a genius and should continue to make good music in whatever band he is in.
2. North American Scum by LCD Soundsystem off the album Sound of Silver. Great song with simple chord progression of E, G, A. "For those of you who think we are still from England, we are North American". I listened to this song on the forth of July a couple of years ago all day. It was a great day.
3. Theologians by Wilco off the album A Ghost is Born. Great song about people telling you things about yourself that may not be very true as it is that they are not you. They make good use of the guitar in this song.
4. I am Trying to Break Your Heart by Wilco off the album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Funny song I think but also their most psychedelic one also. There is nothing but ambient sounds for the first two minutes of it.
5. Get Innocuous by LCD Soundsystem off the album Sound of Silver. I honestly can't make out the lyrics of it at the beginning, but I just love the beat. It is very electronica, but it just pumps me up. I always end up bobbing my head a little on this one.
The Weird Art of the MLK Library
Of all the strange and peculiar art pieces at the library, my favorite had to be the electronic version of the Rosetta Stone on the 3rd floor. Sure, there was cooler looking art pieces like the rotating bookshelf or the redwood tree pillar, but nothing stood out to me as much as the Rosetta Stone. I don't know was on it either. There seemed to be some sort of streaming information on it that which I have no idea what it means or was. I have always seemed to enjoyed history classes and the rendition of the stone just comes at me. Without that stone, the information that we have learned from the Egyptians would be not known. Its importance to history drew me to the piece. Even though it was my favorite, I also really liked the one with the tally of all the books ever checked out in the last five years. the number was over 45 million when I saw it. that just astounds me since I never go to the library. I probable should too with some of my research projects coming up. I'll be proud to apart of the millions on that board. I mean really, millions! That is just unbelievable to me. Not a bad library all in all. I look forward to seeing more of it as I start using it.
Study Tip #3
Remember to give yourself ample time before a test to begin studying or any project. Try not to start it the week it is due.
Early Music Memories
My musical taste in life has changed several times adjusting to the times, the radio stations' preferences, and to what my family is listening to. Now in my life, I can say I have a variety of tastes in music, at least a little bit. I try not to get stuck in one place for so long, but I would like to find a genre to call home. As I grew up, I tended to go with either the crowd or what my family liked. I was lucky though that my family had pretty good taste in music.
As a kid, the earliest music I can remember other than Raffi would have to be the White Album by the beetles. I don't know why, but this album I can remember listening to as far back as I know. But, after listening to this music for so long, I think I just got a little tired of it or something because after awhile any Beetles song just seemed boring. I guess listening to music that was written during a time of heavy drug use and social conflict might come across as boring. I can say though that now I do not believe that they are not boring. By about the age of seven or eight, I believe the Rolling Stones and the Allman Brother Band started getting played or at least I remember them getting played. My dad would play them on all road trips. To me during the early and mid 90's, it didn't seem like there was any other music around. I can't tell you any of the musicians that were around then except for Michael Jackson. Even then, I could tell something was up with him. Honestly, I remember two songs from that time, Zoot Suit Riot by god knows who and that Michael Jackson song for Free Willy.
I don't know the exact year, but when the late 90's pop star revival happened, you know with all the rejects from Star Search and the Mickey Mouse Club, I took a step back from music that was popular which still affects me to this day. All that crap just came across to me as crap(pardon my simplicity). It wasn't music, it was, is, an abomination created by the record companies to make money. Well, at least they got there's with karma; online downloading of music has hurt them terribly. I started listening to bands that were on a rock radio station called Kroq. Not bad for the time. They played many different stuff from Nirvana and Weezer to Sublime and Blink -182. For a time, I thought Blink-182 was so good, but now looking back at it, they sucked, a lot. I did and still do love Sublime and Weezer though, so for that, I am grateful to Kroq. Kroq itself slowly has become a radio station in the last few years that stuck with the same music it played in the 90's. The music they play now is bad and I believe they know it. I can see that station turing into a 90's rock station very soon, if it technically is not one already.
Entering the 2000's, Kroq still ruled my life, but music like Led Zeppelin, Donovan, CCR, Cream, The Steve Miller Band, Traffic, Beck, Bob Dylan, The White Strips, and specifically Jethro Tull start getting to me. I only say specifically Jethro Tull because I can clearly remember listening to them for the first time. I heard the on the way to my drum practice and I kept asking my dad who was this and he always told me, yet I usually ended up forgetting the name within a few days. I don't listen to them quite that much now, but the were the beginning of a different music wave in my life. Listening to that group of music eventually lead my to groups like Pink Floyd, The Velvet Underground, AC/DC, the Band, David Bowie, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Johnny Cash, and Eric Clapton and all his endeavors. He has been in 9 major music groups since 1963 not to mention several studio appearances for albums which include, if you didn't know, even the Beetles. I hung around this group for a good while along with the other guys that were played on Kroq.
Not until maybe half way through high school did I really change what I listen to and to this day still listen to. My brother's friend, Nick, was a huge Phish phan, but with their demise, had to change and find a new band; he did. Wilco. He subsequently got my brother hooked on them and eventually me as well. I listened to their album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. The first 2 times I listened to it, I really didn't know what to think. Even for all the music I had ever listened to, I had never listened to a band like them. I still don't know what it is, but by the 3rd time I listened to it, it hit me that this was good, really good. I can only describe it as everything that pop music and crapy late 90's music wasn't. To be completely honest, the singer is absolutely atune, without tune. It is conventional and unconventional all at once. They were the beginning of a new wave of music for me, a wave that is still washing over me. They have lead to bands like Of Montreal, Radiohead, and LCD Soundsystem. They say that the music taste of your 20's is the musical taste of your life and I hope for it to stay this way. I really wouldn't mind having this kind of music the same sort I am listening to in 30 years.

Exercise 1.2 and 2.5
1.2
1. I wish to be in school still, have a job, and have a GPA of 3.4 or higher.2. Many people drop out of school or flunk out and i hope I am not one of them. I would like to have a job so I have money to spend on items. I personally just want to keep up the GPA I had in high school into college.
3. I guess my goal is to have a job within six months. Yes it is a lot of time, but I am giving myself some room.
4. I will do my homework quickly to allow me to see that I have too much time on my hands. I will plan my schedule next semester to allow myself to have a job. I will start looking around town for businesses that I wouldn't mind working for.
5. Every week I will go out into the city to look at businesses in the area within walking distance.
2.5
1. I will get a job by the start of second semester. I wish to have money. this is not very challenging, but I can be picky about who has a employment. This is very realistic. I will check out businesses in the area. I will make sure I have time in my schedule for work. I will make sure I don't fall behind with my work.
2. I would like to have 15 new friends by the end of the semester. I would like to know more people so I have people to hang out with. It could be challenging, but no it is not. It is very realistic. Speak up when introduced to new people. Go out to parties. Be eager to meet new people.
3. Get a 3.4 or higher this semester. I have always gotten above a 3.0 and I would like to start off my first semester doing well. This goal could be challenging, but I doubt it will be in the end. This is realistic. I will not procrastinate. I will not turn in late work. I will stay up to date on all my subjects.
Study Tip #2
Study with water and food within arm distance so you don't need to get up and therefore you will not get distracted.

Google Myself
I recently googled myself and found nothing. The first site I saw was a site that searches for ancestry of a person. Most of the sites came up either because a person had my first name or last name in their name. In the past I have googled myself and the most interesting thing I saw was on article on Darius Dewberry, the college football player. I do not feel sad about it and I actually feel good about the results. It lets me know that you cannot just google my name to get to know who I am.

Top Ten Songs
My top ten songs. I will note that there isn't any particular order because it hurts me to much to say one is over the other one.
10. Another Brick in the Wall by Pink Floyd off of the album The Wall. I love this song and the beat of it. Who hasn't at one point thought exactly what the song says. " We don't need no education."
9. Money by Pink Floyd off of the album Dark Side of the Moon. A must listen to song by this band and the best song off that album.
8. Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd off of the album Wish You Were Here. The best song that Pink Floyd ever wrote. It always evokes emotion out of me when I listen.
7. Ziggy Stardust by David bowie off the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. This song barely beats out Suffragette City for me and I just love to listen to Bowie belt this one.
6. Hurricane by Bob Dylan off the album Desire. I loved the movie and I loved this song. I also like other Dylan songs,, but this one has always stood out to me and no one can beat Dylan in telling a story.
5. Baba O' Riley by The Who off the album Who's Next. Who doesn't like this song?
4. Sympathy For the Devil by The Rolling Stones off the the album Beggars Banquet. The instrumentals at the begin of this song and the guitar solo by Keith make this song an instant classic.
3. Gimmie Shelter by The Rolling Stones off the Album Let It Bleed. Oh my God, I love this song. I always do a little air guitar on this song.
2.Let It Bleed by the Rolling Stones off the Album Let It Bleed. " We all need someone to lean to on, and if you want it, you can lean on me." A great beat mixed with a bluesy feel make this an amazing song.
1A. While My Guitar Gently Weeps by George Harrison. This may have been written when he was with the Beetles, but this is a George Harrison Song. I particular love this song when it was done for the Concert For George when he died. George was always the most talented Beetle and he never gets credit for it. He wrote straight up just great songs that weren't too poppy( McCartney) or too overly political (Lennon).
1B. The Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin off the album Led Zeppelin III. The greatest intro to an album ever. If I could, I would put ever song off this album on the list.
1C. Spiders(KIdsmoke) by Wilco off the album A Ghost Is Born. The best song ever written my my favorite band. It is ridiculously simple too. It is the same beat through the whole song as it leads up to big breakdowns every three minutes. I saw them do this song live and it blew my mind. It only took them twenty minutes to perform.

All about me
Hey I'm spencer. I like all different kinds of music but in general i like rock and specfically classic rock. Bands like the stones or the beetles to name a few. I dont like most wanna be rockers, you either are one or you are not. of the modern bands, i got to say my favorite has to be wilco. they are just awsome to me and i saw them i concert and they kick major ass. i also saw radiohead and i liked them before but now i got to respect them. they are all just extremely talented musicians. most modern bands out there right now that im into were because my brothers were into them. they have good taste in music and i follow them. i was never very good when i was younger at choosing what kink of i liked. i think the first album i ever bought was big willy style by will smith. i have no idea what i was i thinking. i got a lot of flack for that from my brothers ad deservedly so too. the earliest band i can remember listening to was the beetles, but sadly at a young age i grew tired of them at least for a time. my dad would play it all the time it seemed until i was seven. after that, i can remember rolling stones coming into the picture a bit. the earliest song of theirs i remember isnt even theirs; it was like a rolling stone by bob dylan. after that point of my life, the music gets a little fuzzy. this was the time of boy bands and Brittany Spears. its about two years of my life that the only music i can remember of the time was them. i don't even like them. I just felt like no one else existed during that time. Personally, i think this was the lowest point in music in years. Luckily, i discovered bands like Led Zeppelin that got me out of that point of life. it felt like at the time after the teen pop had already been around for a few years that there was no good music being made. Hip hop quickly became big at this time, or at least the version of it as it is now did. I don't get it. Honestly, how can i relate to them. they either taking about being in the ghetto or about how much shit they have. I don't have a lot of shit; I'm not having huge parties where half naked chicks are dancing in money and i don't have chains weighting down my neck. I don't know what happened to music and it still happening to it. Genres collided creating a hip hop, pop, rap, and rock monstrosity. Personally, the only good music, except the occasional good songs from hip hop, is found in non-mainstream. Well, i guess that's my choice in area in music
